On Monday, July 2, 2017, at approximately 10:35 a.m., the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer assigned to passenger screening at John F. Kennedy International Airport observed an irregularity on a baggage screen for Flight 897 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Orlando, Florida. The CBP officer contacted the supervisor of the secondary inspection area and instructed him to conduct a visual inspection of the baggage.
A CBP canine alerted to the presence of narcotics inside one of the bags checked in on Flight 897. The CBP officer then contacted United Airlines personnel who removed the bag from screening and placed it into custody for further investigation. A subsequent search of the bag by law enforcement resulted in the discovery of approximately 9 kilograms (20 pounds) of cocaine hidden inside a package addressed to an individual in Orlando, Florida.
The cocaine was turned over to United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials who are now working with local law enforcement to identify and arrest those involved in this illicit activity.
